ARC Review: How I Met Your Father by L.B. Gregg

How I Met Your Father - L.B. Gregg

I was a bit put off initially, when within the first 25%, the character had used the word "impossibly" four times. A dick doesn't get "impossibly" harder. If it's "impossibly", then it's basically not possible.

You keep using that word...

But then the author found her stride and stopped this nonsense. What followed was a rapidly moving tale of lust at first sight, a holy-hot-boysecks-batman airport bathroom encounter, a surprise reunion, and some funny mishaps that had me in snickering for most of it. It's a fun romp between an in-the-closet ex-boybander and his best friend's future father-in-law.

This isn't a deep book, with lots of meaning, though the author made a few good points (like the relationship between Jack and his kids, and the fact that Jack seems to have been left out of things). It also felt rather rushed, what with all the plot points included, and I think this book would have been four star material if it had taken the time to delve a bit deeper into the issues raised. Because of this, I felt it lacked cohesion, and that it tried to stuff too many things into the pages that would have been better served in an expanded version, so we could have gotten some better answers.

I didn't fully understand the relationship between Jack and his kids. I felt that there wasn't enough time spend on the age gap, and the ensuing issues of that. I didn't understand the purpose of Jack's son - was he only a tool to raise the disapproval point?

In short, I felt the author attempted too much for a novella. I wish this had been longer, and thus given the time it deserved.

What you get here is a quick read that should appeal primarily due to the humorous situations and the organic dialogue, even if Justin sounded a bit girlish at the beginning. It's the kind of book you read on a rainy day when you need a little pick-me-up.
