ARC Review: Vinny, Porn Star by J.P. Barnaby

Vinny, Porn Star - J.P. Barnaby

I've been waiting for the ARC of this book, ever since the author announced she was writing it, and when it landed in my email a couple of days ago, I was super excited.

Aging porn star Dom is asked to introduce youngling to BDSM in preparation for youngling's shoot with a hardcore D/s company.

I liked both Vinny and Jason. I liked that Angel/Jason had backbone, and that Vinny had a softer side underneath the hard, experienced Dom exterior. I even liked the almost hero-worship from Jason's side.

The writing was straight-forward, with good dialogue and well-flowing narrative, but I didn't connect to the relationship between Vinny and Jason. With all of Vinny's protesting that he's not looking for a permanent sub, I had a hard time buying the rapid change of mind. I could appreciate that the author gave sufficient background information about both characters, without making it feel like info-dump, but Vinny still seems too hung up on his previous long-term relationship to make a believable transition into wanting Jason.

On a positive note, the scenes between Vinny and Angel are really well done, at least from my perspective. Vinny appears to be a very good Dom, always checking with the sub, and he did a great job explaining what I presume to be accurate rules and expectations. The author also did a fabulous job educating Angel/Jason about safewords and such, and how even an experienced Dom can misstep with a new sub.

I think what this book really suffers from, at least for me, is too-shortness. I think if we'd been given a bit more time with both of them, a bit longer to get to know them as individuals and with each other, I wouldn't have felt so bereft at the end.

I do love this series, and am looking forward to the next one, if there's one coming our way, but this wasn't my favorite.

Still, I hope you'll give this a try.
