ARC Review: Fire Inside by Dawn Douglas

Fire Inside - Dawn Douglas

The blurb sounded interesting enough - ex-marine, now PA/driver/babysitter for basketball superstar, forming a relationship that goes from friends to more, with a hint at some angst.

And it delivered, as far as that was concerned, with a HFN that I could believe in. Until I got to the author's note.

Eric was believable as the tough ex-marine. He was no nonsense, but also careful, especially when he saw that his expectations of working for an arrogant, coddled athlete weren't met.

Tyley Haley was also believable as the tortured athlete who's fighting his own demons, and who latches on to Eric tentatively but strongly.

I bought their relationship, going from friends to lovers, and I appreciated that the author didn't let them tumble head first into bed. That she gave them time to build the relationship on more than sex, and that she didn't make it easy for either of them.

This was a nicely done novella. Until the author's note. I didn't need the happy ending - the HFN sufficed.
