Book Review: Loving Hector by John Inman

Loving Hector - John Inman

What a fun romp!!! I giggle-snorted almost the whole time I was reading this book, earning me lots of confused looks from DH. I adored both Dill and Hector, and all the side characters, including Dill's mom, who refuses to accept that he's gay, his stoic, yet supportive dad, his OTT gramps, his bosses at the bakery - they all were hilarious fun. Even Chester (Noodles) had me giggling.

I loved the relationship between Dill and Hector, even though it went from "hey, I met you at that bar" to "I love you and please move in" in what seemed like a few minutes, but they fit together and they knew it, and so I didn't care that it smacked of insta-love. It was a case of "when you know, you know", and that worked for me.

The snarky banter, the over the top humor, and the inner workings of Dill's mind all had me in stitches more often than not. And yet, underneath all the humor, there were poignant moments too, and Dill's realization that he's in love for the first time made my heart clench. There is also some real sweetness about their relationship that shines through the humor and the banter.

Valdemaro, Hector's ex, was the quintessential mustache-twirling villain, a caricature, but I didn't care. He reminded me a bit of Vizzini from The Princess Bride - all self-proclaimed superiority, smug as can be, but then ultimately stumbles and falls anyway. And it didn't even require any Iocaine powder - just a mighty mutt.

This wasn't meant to be taken seriously, and I read this book for what it is - a hilarious slapstick comedy with a good chunk of sweet and hawt romance between Dill and Hector. Absolutely fabulous!!
