ARC Review: Special Delivery by Heidi Cullinan

Special Delivery (Special Delivery, #1) - Heidi Cullinan

This book will be featured on my blog on 2/4 for the re-release, so please stop by then.

The book opens with one of the best sentences I've ever read in an M/M romance novel.

"In the deserted men’s restroom at the back of Middleton Community College, Sam Keller knelt on the tile, braced his hands against Keith Jameson’s thighs and broke his mother’s heart."

And with that one sentence, Heidi Cullinan sucked me right into this novel, which I read in its revised version. And when I say 'read', I mean 'inhaled'. From the first word, I couldn't help but feel for Sam Keller and his struggles to make a life for himself, knowing he's searching for something, but too afraid to ask for what he needs and too scared to reach for it.

When he first meets Mitch, the big trucker clapping at Sam's impromptu dance routine, he is so struck dumb by the burly man and so aroused that he follows him into the semi for a quick "bend over and fuck me".

From there, Sam embarks on a kinky, sexy and somewhat terrifying trip south with his new buddy, who has dark secrets of his own. The push and pull, the awkwardness and the secrets they are both keeping from each other come to a head when they reach Vegas and Mitch's friend Randy.

Secrets are revealed, walls crumble, and the ending was superbly satisfying. I awed a lot.

Heidi delivered an outstanding novel of kinky sex, deep emotions and two (well, three) men who need each other much more than either of them recognizes. The themes range from going after what you want, to setting free what you love in hopes it will return, and friends who love you for who you are and help you along as needed. The writing is engaging, passionate and thoughtful, the dialogue organic and often humorous, but also emotional and real.

And while I had some issues with Randy initially, by the end he really grew on me, and I found myself rather looking forward to his own book, Double Blind. He's at once the glue that brings Sam and Mitch together, and the push they need to find what they were looking for all along.

The sex is smoking hot, but never felt gratuitous, and is used to further and foster the plot line and the relationship.

The scenes at the end had me smiling so hard that my cheeks hurt. It was beautifully done, and I highly recommend reading this book.
