One Night of Misbehavior

One Night of Misbehavior - Shelley Munro One Night of Misbehavior is a modern day Cinderella story, complete with Prince Charming, a wicked stepmother and two equally nasty step-sisters. Set in New Zealand, the author paints a harsh reality for Charlotte Dixon. Kept as not much more than a cheap maid, she's expected to look after her step-grandmother, cook, clean and run errands for her step-mother and step-sisters.Her fairy god-mother step-grandmother arranges for Charlotte to attend a masquerade ball where she meets a sexy, mysterious man with whom she spends the night. Sexy mystery man turns out to be Ash Marlborough, whom she meets again during a job interview for his company. He's been unable to forget the woman from the ball and is delighted to meet her again. The author succeeds in modernizing the old fairy tale and delivers a cute, somewhat fluffy yet entertaining novel, complete with a rags to riches transformation and the deserved comeuppance for the wicked step-mother and her daughters. The writing drew this reader right into the story and allowed an immediate connection with the heroine. The story is told from both Charlotte's and Ash's POV, in third person limited. The erotic scenes are well-written and delivered with emotion, yet not too purplish. The characterizations were equally well rounded, and this reader couldn't help but wish the pest onto the step-mother and hope that Charlotte gained her prince and her freedom. It can be tricky to write the villains as no more than caricatures, but there was depth to the step-sisters, and the portrayal of the step-mother made sense in the context of the novel. She remains a villain throughout, as expected, but didn't feel entirely one-dimensional in this aspect. Ash was everything a modern romance hero was supposed to be. Scarred both inside and out, he became a knight in shining armor and Charlotte's most vocal supporter. Yes, there are tons of cliches, including insta-lust that quickly turns to love, but I didn't mind that in this book. I read it the way it was meant to be read - a fairy tale. As such, this novel delivered. This is a great book to devour on the beach on a sunny day, or curling up in your favorite chair with a nice cup of tea.Give it a try.I received a free ARC from the publisher via Netgalley. A positive review was not promised in return.
